The answer appears to be a disappointing not really, according to a study conducted by the American Council on Exercise and researchers at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse Exercise and Health Program. (See the study here.) None of the six most aerobically challenging games tested—Free Run, Island Run, Free Step, Advanced Step, Super Hula Hoop, and Rhythm Boxing—was intense enough to maintain or improve a person’s cardio endurance. The calorie burn isn’t very impressive either. For example, though you will sweat off an average of 114 calories by playing Rhythm Boxing for 30 minutes, that’s just a third of what you’d burn during 30 minutes of traditional boxing.
The bottom line: Playing Wii Fit games can help you burn some calories, it shouldn’t be your only workout.
