We’ve all heard the phrase “it takes a village” and most of us probably agree with the sentiment. But in our hectic, day-to-day lives, how many of us stop to help mentor a child—whether that’s a formal mentorship or simply hanging out with a friends’ kids?
If you’re looking for a way to donate your time and skills to a good cause, this month (National Mentoring month—who knew?) is a great reminder that mentoring a child is a wonderfully immediate way to make an impact.
There are lots of ways to get involved. You can contact your local Big Brothers Big Sisters, which encourages volunteers to do casual activities like playing games, going to museums, or grabbing a slice of pizza with their “little sibs.”
Or check out Mentoring.org, which lets you look up opportunities by zip code. (And has lots of helpful info and resources.)
Can’t find a program in your area? (And don’t know someone’s kids to steal for an afternoon?) Icouldbe.org is an online mentoring organization that matches at-risk middle and high school students with adult professionals across the country for guidance.
