Love in the Age of Skype

So by now, you’re probably familiar with eHarmony, Match and JDate, and maybe even know a successful couple (congrats, Bill and Sue!) who’ve met online. But how about lovebirds who’ve courted online, too? I came across the sweet, modern love story of Air Force Captain Matt Howard and his new bride, Lanessa Lawrence, who’d never met in person before marrying on New Year’s Eve via an online ceremony performed on Skype. The couple conducted their entire dating process on the online videoconferencing service, after initally meeting on Match.com, and married while Lanessa was at home in Texas and the groom was at Bagram Air Base, in Afghanistan.
And now that winter is assuredly upon us, who wants to bundle up and attempt to meet Mr. Right at a bar or a party while looking like a red-faced, runny-nosed abominable snowlady? (Uggs do not stilettos make.) Online dating sites are reporting a huge surge in membership in frigid Europe, where housebound Brits are not allowing icy temps to chill their dating lives.
What’s your online love story? Have you ever tried a dating site, or know anyone who’s met a match online?

Thanks for the shout out Jen!
I was never one who thought online dating was right for me. In fact I thought it was lame.
However, after years of bad luck in the dating combined with a lack of self confidence when it came to speaking to women at bars, in public and in general- I decided to do match.com
Best.move.ever.
I met the absolute most wonderful woman in the world. And in reality, had it not been for that site, we would’ve never met since we lived 20 plus miles away from each other.
And now, three years later, we’re going to have the most fun wedding and most awesome life together.

I met my husband the old fashioned way through mutual friends, but we know a happily married couple in their 60′s who found love on-line. I think both were ready to give up on the concept, but the very last day before her membership expired, she and her future husband connected & they are very well suited & happy together. Both are retired professionals, love to travel, and enjoy life.
I don’t think I’d be brave enough to try on-line dating if I were on the dating market, but I admire those who find partners & make a love connection. My husband is the light & love of my life & the friend who introduced us thought we’d be a perfect match. She was right. My confirmed bachelor husband decided to take the plunge & he is a wonderful husband.
