Go Ask Gab: Unique Ways to Store Jewelry

Gab, my jewelry box is not big enough for my bigger pieces… do you have any any unique suggestions for how to store jewelry?  – Krista

I have struggled with the same thing in the past and finally came up with a system. I treat my jewelry (and sometimes my bags and shoes) as decoration and display them around my room. I found different ways to keep my pieces neat but also allow me to see everything. Here are some ideasPicture 5:

Hang your necklaces on interesting hooks. I bought two of these door knob hooks from Urban Outfitters. Anthropologie is my all time favorite place for home shopping. You can find all types of cute things like this squirrel hook and inside out bowl. Picture 4

I use unique dishes and plates to store my rings, bracelets and small necklaces. I like to line them up on my window sill or stage them around the room. I love these Warhol themed dishes my friend Tina got me from CB2. Trays or plates also can come in handy. Loving this decorative tray from Target (which is where I found my alphabet plate on the top right picture).

If you don’t have space in your bedroom (maybe you share a room with someone who doesn’t want to be reminded of  how many necklaces you own!)  try using a strip of hooks from The Container Store in your bathroom or closet.

So what’s your system? (Shoving your jewelry in a drawer is not the right answer!)

  1. Love the idea of hanging them from pretty hooks! I have a lot of boring, white wall space in my bedroom and my necklaces are so pretty they’d make great decorations.

  3. I love hand made pins and have a collection of beautiful pins that I could not bear to leave in a drawer or box so I had little metal frames made with a velvet mat. They cut a hole in the mat to fit the pin back and I use a piece of card stock to lock the pin in place. I arrange them on a narrow shelve in my dressing area . They make me smile every day when I see them. It gives me the added benefit of reminding me to wear them

  4. I use fish tackle boxes to hold earrings and small pieces, necklaces tangle easily, so they go on strips of hooks like the ones you mentioned.

  5. I usebelt buckels fro decorating y bathrm. pictures ….Once the leather belt is no longer for my use I give save the belt for tying books up…They look lovely as a gift…The silver/gold buckles I keep & use to decorate my rm/or guset rm bathroom…Next to a picture, or by the towel racks they do look lovely and I do change them as often as I lke…Plus I can also use the buckles otied to a scarf and I can either use them as a belt or as a decorating part of my scarf….Ialso use my pins that are gifts to me on a lovely towel and pin them in between the two towels and the pins decorate the toel rack and guest rm…Ialso do this in my bathrm…That way I can alsway see them and remember who gave them to me…Plus they really do look nice, since I do not wear the….If I decide to wear my animal pins I sut them on my jeans along the leg seam & they do look nice..I’ve had many a compliments on this….Or I can pin them to my hat or my visors…They do look lovely and only wear earrings…Since there is enough glitz on the visor/hat…The other day I wore a wrapped a scarf around my forehead and it looked lovely but it needed something else, so I took one of the pins off the towel rack and put it on the scarf and it looked truly lovely….Then my hoop easrrings and out to lunch I went w/a friend then off to the beauty partor to havethe hair done…It only takes a few seconds and one can look very nice just playing around w/things that you feel you hae no use s for…..I love oooold necklaces that my mom has sincec I was a kid, I tear the up and re-do them for her with newly purchase beads all mixed up, then I send them to her and she never recognizes her oooold stuff…She loves when jewelry …she loves when I play w/her old stuff, enough left over for earrings as well….Sooo much to do w/old stuff…I also go to the thrift stores and look around for old jewelry to decorate my hats.visors and sometimes sell them as well…I have fun…I also use old beads to decorate picture frames that I love to give as gifts w/s special photo or an invitation for a special birthday or charity…All appreciated by fa. and friend….
