Go Ask Gab: Oscar Fashion Hits and Misses

It’s Fresh New You week and what could be more fun than to start the week off with some super-glam inspiration? There some great moments at last night’s 82nd annual Academy Awards: Neil Patrick Harris opening the show, Kathyrn Bigelow being the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar, the John Hughes tribute. And there were the not-so-great moments: The interpretive dances to the best scores, and what was with the exclusion of Farrah Fawcett in the “In Memoriam” section!?!  There were also great and not-so-great fashion moments, too. Here’s my take!

gagSandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock: The big winner of the night shined in a gold Marchesa dress. Not only was the dress stunning, her hair and bright lip were AMAZING! The entire look was just Oscar gold… how appropriate that she won!

Gag- Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Print is usually not seen on red carpets, which is why I found this dress refreshing and young. Extra points for picking an atypical award show fashion designer like Dries Van Noten.

Gag Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz: Cameron shined as well in this Oscar De La Renta gown. Normally, she wears something more fun but I prefer her more grown-up look.

Gag- Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart: I thought Kristen looked beautiful in Monique Lhuillier. She is usually a bit more grunge and pouty but when gets glammed up and smiles she is a knock out!

Gag- Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams: Confession: Rachel McAdams is my girl crush! She looked so fabulous last night in this Elie Saab dress and I loved the big earring as well. Again, a print is always a fresh look.

Gag- Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker: I always appreciate a fashion forward look on the red carpet but SJP’s Chanel Haute Couture light yellow gown left me with mixed feelings. First I hated it, then it grew on me and now I am just not sure! Plus her hair was a bit much.

Gag- Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan: Although I do think the Prada dress itself is gorgeous, her shoe choice was entirely wrong. The shorter front of the dress paired with a thick ankle strap just cut her leg at the wrong place.

Gag Vera Farmiga
Vera Farmiga: I found this Marchesa dress just unflattering. Too much volume! She has a great shape so why is she hiding it?

GagDiane Kruger

Diane Kruger: I consider her one of the most stylish female celebs but lately she’s been letting me down. I am sure this Chanel Haute Couture gown had hanger appeal but I think I would prefer it without the messy applique section in the middle.

Gag- Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron: I mean honestly, Charlize would be gorgeous in a potato sack but the Christian Dior dress she picked was just wrong. If she wanted everyone to be looking at her breasts all night, she succeeded!

  1. maggie loves maggie in her dries dress. and the color is refreshing against all the sun-bleached colors the other ladies were wearing.

  2. I agree, especially with Sarah”s channel…How come no mention of the very tasteful Miren and Streep? I agree with the maggie’s print.

Kudos to Oprah, her dress complimented her.

  3. I like all your picks! I think I’ve moved SJP to my “MISS” list though. She could do better. And it looks a little bit maternity-ish to me.

  4. Great job Gabs! I agree on all counts-from the non pouty Kristen to the unconventional Maggie.

  5. They all looked great. What did you think of Hilary Swank’s plunging low-cut dress?

  6. I totally agree on your hits. I also really loved Demi Moore’s and Miley’s dresses. I absolutely did not like SJP’s and I LOVED Diane Kruger’s. So funny. I think though, that my all-time favorite of the night was Cameron’s. After seeing her on the red carpet, I was googling Oscar de la Renta all night!! :)

  7. While I’m still waiting to watch the red carpet entrances from the Oscars, you’ve done a great recap, Gab. I love Maggie G’s Dries dress–it’s refreshing to see a simpler silhouette and a beautiful print. I’m tired of the fluff and sparkle.
