Spike Your Juice?

Wow! This prohibition craze is really getting out of hand! First is was faux-speakeasies, and now you can make your own alcoholic beverages (no bathtub required). I’ll admit, when this product first crossed my desk, I thought it was a bit silly, and in truth, I probably will not be making more home brew any time soon. None of that changes the fact that it’s a pretty cool project (not for kids though—duh!) and really does explain (in the simplest of terms) just how alcohol is made.
Spike Your Juice is based on federweisser, a lightly alcoholic Eastern European drink that is only available during the grape harvest in the Fall. The directions are pretty straightforward—it’s literally 3 steps to cocktail time! Let’s make some. Shall we?
Step 1: Pick Your Juice
The box comes with everything you need to make it, except the juice. I used peach-cranberry juice cocktail. Nice, right?
Step 2: Spike Your Juice
Add the contents of the packet to the juice. I think it’s yeast…hold on, let me check. Yup. Yeast…and some other stuff, but mostly yeast.
Step 3: Seal & Wait
Fill the airlock (the beaker/tube thingy) with water and place it in the rubber stopper. Seal the bottle with the stopper and wait for at least 48 hours. Uh, come again? 48 hours, you say? Um, ok…new step! Step 4: Open a bottle of wine and wait for Spike Your Juice to work it’s magic.
2 DAYS LATER…
So after 2 days, it’s time to give it a try. It smelled kind of yeasty, but still fruity. And it tasted delicious. Kind of like a wine cooler, only more natural. Very refreshing on a warm summer day. Unfortunately, I didn’t mix up any of the cocktail suggestions included in the box, but a Spike Sangria sounds divine!
So the end result was very drinkable. A great low-alcohol drink option.
