Ladies We Love: Debbie Meyer

Her name may not ring a bell at first, but you’ve surely seen Debbie Meyer’s products—her first was the kake-kut’r, a product she invented and launched in 1999. Since then, she’s created more products simply based on her own household needs. “When I thought, ‘I’m solving my problem’ I would show it to somebody; my friends, my relatives, whoever,” she said. One of Debbie’s most popular products is GreenBags, which help keep your produce fresh for longer. She worked for years to come up with the bag’s formulation, but it paid off: over 400 million have sold since it launched in 2005.
Today Debbie appears regularly on HSN and works with the eWomenNetwork (they also presented her with their Lifetime Achievement Award last year) to inspire women who want to be entrepreneurs themselves. “Many are employees and want to know how to be better at what they do, how to feel better about where they are,” she said. Her advice to them? “Be the best you can possibly be. If you clean streets, you be the best darn street sweeper you can be. I think it’s a way of refreshing their self-ideal. You don’t have to aspire to be something else. You can aspire to be the best you are.”
What makes me a lady: The word lady is what you aspire to be, not what you start out as. And trying to find the best in people, the best in the situation and raising people up.
Favorite guilty pleasure: Just being able to sit on the floor and watch my grandson sleep. I love that. Just watching him grow is a real guilty pleasure.
Three things on your life list: It’s hard to say. I get to do such wonderful things now. It’s not like I could say I want to go to some place specific. To me it’s just filling up my life with all those things so I can look back and say, “You know what? I don’t even have a bucket list because I got to do them.”
If I could have a super power, it would it be: I suppose cloning myself would be a super power. Make two of me so I could be doing more than one thing at a time.
Ladies I admire: My mom. She talked about how to be anything you wanted to be and she taught me so many things. And rather than name people, I’d like to say I admire any woman who does her best, any woman who tries all the time to do better, to be better, to provide for her family. And the providing doesn’t have to be monetary. It’s to provide an emotional, stable base for a family to grow. So I really admire all women because I believe all women do that. All women try. Some are better than others, perhaps. Some are more successful at it than others, but as long as you’re trying you’ve got my heart because that’s how I live.
