LHJ Book Club: The Shoemaker’s Wife Giveaway
August 1, 2012 at 9:30 am , by Ladies' Lounge
Operatic. That’s the word that will (not so coincidentally) spring to mind as you get caught up in this sweeping epic, The Shoemaker’s Wife, by Adriana Trigiani. Ciro Lazzari and Enza Ravenelli meet as teenagers in their native Italy, kiss, then part. They meet again in New York City, where each has been forced to start over—Ciro as a shoemaker and Enza as a seamstress who ends up at the Metropolitan Opera designing costumes for the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso. Theirs is a story of missed connections until one of them stages a dramatic intervention that changes their fate. Written with a sharp eye for period details, this novel (inspired by Trigiani’s grandparents) pays tribute to generations of Italian immigrants who made their way in the New World with optimism, grit and a passion for work, family, good food and wine—and enduring love.
We’re giving away 20 copies of The Shoemaker’s Wife, now in paperback (and perfect for your book club)! Want the chance to win one? Leave a comment below!
Plus, check out extra goodies, like discussion questions and a letter from the author, here.

Beautiful costumes in Operatic Musicals with such awesome people who had made them, has to be interesting reading back in the day. The romance, the passion, and thrill being on the stage sets. Must have felt like a Princess even going to the Opera back in those days. What a read this is.

I listened to the book on CD and it was amazing!! At that time I didn’t realize Adriana read the second half and emailed her telling her how much I loved the book but wished the lady who read the first half of the book would have read the whole book. To my horror the very sweet Adriana responded to me telling me it was her who had read the second half. Adriana was so wonderful telling me they were rerecording the book with just the other lady but Adriana was so gracious and open to feedback!!! Love her and love love love The Shoemaker’s Wife!!!!

I recently listened to The Shoemaker’s Wife on CD. I absolutely loved the story but halfway through the book the reader’s voice switched to another reader and I emailed Adriana telling her I love the book but wished the reader from the first half would have read the entire book. To my horror Adriana emailed me back and told me it was her who had read the second half of the book. Adriana was so gracious and sweet! She was so accepting of feedback! Love her and love love love The Shoemaker’s Wife!!! (I submitted already but it didn’t show up?)

I love that you make your self so accessible to your fans. I adored Lucia , Lucia. I am the Director of School Programs at a small historical house on Staten Island called the Garibaldi- Meucci Museum . It is dedicated to two extraordinary men. The first being Guiseppe Garibaldi, the George Washington of Italy and the second Antonio Meucci, the true inventor of the telephone . School groups come to visit this home and hear the legends of these great men. Perhaps, your daughter’s class would like to come. Please visit us at Garibaldimeuccimuseum.org for more information. It would be our pleasure to have you visit and present a program.Anything that you can do to help develop awareness of our hidden gem would be fabulous. I love introducing the school groups to a real piece of history. I love your books and met you at Wagner college in a snow storm.
Thank you,
Janet Grillo

Being Italian-American, I grew up listening to wonderful stories of relatives coming to America and how they met, fell in love, worked hard, became successful, and lived the American dream. Their lives were centered around family, faith, friends, food, and fun times–which we still value in our lives today. I’m looking forward to reading this book!

That book sounds like a natural for our Book Club.
I always have one or two books going–a more serious one and one for escape. Almost always, I donate my books to the local library and they have a resale room which gives others the opportunity to pick up books for a reasonable price. It is a wonderful library. For those reasons, I would appreciate winning what sounds like a great book!

Can’t wait to read this book. I can relate to it’s plot as both of my parents came to America from Italy mom was only 19 and father was 32–he went back to Italy to marry his first wife’s youngest sister—a promise he made to her on her death bed. My mom and dad had a wonderful marraige -even tho such marraige was arranged

I would be driving and at times I literally had to pull over in order to collect myself! The book really makes you think about your ancestry and appreciate family!! I truly hope the book is made into a movie just to bring attention to the amazing author and the masterful manner in which she wrote the book. Thanks for listening to me ramble but I truly love a good book and could go on forever about The Shoemaker’s Wife!!!

As soon as The Shoemaker’s Wife came out I bought a copy and dove right into it. It’s a great story sharing the love of family and their journey through life with all it’s ups and downs. Adriana knows how to hold the reader’s attention and imparts her emotions into the story. Love all her books. A paperback copy would be a great addition to anyone’s collection.

I look forward to reading Adriana Trigiani’s latest book. My favorite one of her books is Rococo. It’s so poignant and humorous that I find myself rereading it time and again. Bartolomeo Di Crespi appeals to the Italian-American that I am. It would be an honor to be awarded The Shoemaker’s Wife since my immigrant Italian father was an extraordinary shoemaker himself.

My love for Adriana Trigiani’s books started when my best friend both the Valentine series one year for my birthday. I immediately loved the way she blended her Italian heritage, romance, and travel into her stories. I’ve since read every one of her books and gave my daughter the young reader books she’s written. Now, she’s a fan too. After buying some of the books for my Mom, all of her friends became fans of Adriana’s writing and my cousin decided she loved her too! It’s infectious! I’d love to win this book to share it with another loved one. EVERYONE should have the pleasure of reading it! So, pick me! Thank you!
