In one week, on September 28th, Won’t Back Down starring Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal hits theaters nationwide. We hosted a special screening of the film, which is about two moms who are fighting for their children to get a better education at their school, and one lucky blogger at the screening won a trip to Los Angeles to cover the Teachers Rock concert in support of the film. Here, blogger Diane Sullivan shares her experience.
The month of September has always held a special place in my heart. As a former classroom teacher of twenty years it is a month that signifies a fresh start, a new chance. It’s always been a time where I find myself setting new goals and looking back at the year that has passed by. This year has had its ups and downs but one of the highlights started when I was invited by The Moms to the NYC screening of Won’t Back Down and talk back session with producer Mark Johnson and actresses Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rosie Perez. Office Depot was also on hand with a very powerful Wall of Empowerment where everyone was invited to write a message on a post-it to add to the wall. I knew mine right away. It’s something I’ve said to many students year after year: “Be yourself! There is only ONE you!” At that point I didn’t realize where the night would take me. Read more

CoolMom.com is one of the 10 most influential mom blogs in the country, and the woman behind it is Daphne Brogdon. She blogs about being a parent, and in addition to maintaining her blog, she’s also a stand up comic and television host on the TV Guide Channel—talk about a busy schedule! But it’s the blogging gig that keeps this mother of two young children close to home, where she can dish out advice to fellow moms over the web. One of her latest tips is to consider starting a college fund for your children, and she’s partnered with UPromise, MasterCard and Bank of America to promote a new credit card where one percent of your purchases go into a college savings account with no cap. Check out CoolMom.com for more from Daphne, including her blog and daily videos.
What makes me a lady: I try to always write thank you notes and never show up empty handed. I also don’t call after 8 PM.
Favorite guilty pleasure: Reading tabloid magazines at the nail salon.
Three things on my life list: 1. Have beautiful babies (did that). 2. Take more time to travel. 3. Ride in a hot air balloon.
If I could have a superpower, it would be: To make gobs of money and to always be able to make people laugh.
Ladies I admire: Hillary Clinton, my mother, and all the mothers out there who soldier on, always doing their best.

“Refining your home for authentic living” is the tag line of Melissa Michaels’ interior decorating and lifestyle blog, The Inspired Room. Her home decor ideas are fabulous, but she writes about more than just paint and fabric. Her readers love the way she combines tips and techniques with ways to become inspired by your surroundings, which she says can encourage you to live your most authentic life. Sounds good to us!
What makes me a lady: I ventured out of my comfort zone and started The Inspired Room two years ago, and I found I was stronger and more confident than I ever thought I could be! Each time I try something new, I grow in confidence and find I enjoy the challenge.
Favorite guilty pleasure: I would say chocolate but I seem to have no guilt about indulging in it, so I think I need to find a new, more guilty pleasure.
Three things on my life list: Starting my own interior decorating business, which I finally did at age 40! I really want to learn to embroider. I also want to start an interior decorating outreach program for low income women. Everyone deserves to have a home they love and are proud of.
If I could have a superpower, it would be: I’d be just like I Dream of Jeannie and be able to blink my eyes and appear somewhere else.
Ladies I admire: I admire any lady who is willing to accomplish great things in her world while keeping her family a priority.

We’re kicking things off with Amy Clark, a married mother of two who founded the popular MomAdvice.com. She created the site five years ago so moms would have a place to go for daily advice on just about anything. Today the site has grown into an online community, complete with three blogs, and last year she was even named one of the 50 Most Powerful and Influential Women in Social Media!
What makes me a lady: I am extremely resourceful. When my husband lost his job, I discovered just how far I could make our money stretch. I found a peace and pride in living a thrifty life. Rising up to life’s challenges and changing them into victories is a very empowering feeling. I am so thankful for those life experiences, which definitely shaped me into becoming the lady I am today.
Favorite guilty pleasure: I definitely indulge in inexpensive pleasures. I love a giant Diet Coke from McDonald’s, foot soaks on Friday nights, knitting, Bunco with my best girlfriends and sleeping in late!
