How to Copy Kate Mara’s Shimmery Brown Smoky Eye

April 17, 2014 at 8:00 am , by

The always-lovely Kate Mara was looking fierce at the Transcendance movie premiere in Los Angeles late last week. Her ombre-dipped hair was pulled back into a soft, slightly undone updo showing off her gorgeous smoky eye makeup. We’ll show you how to get her look using Bobbi Brown’s Smokey Warm Eye Palette.

Begin by smoothing on your favorite primer and foundation and swipe a coral blush from the apples of your cheeks up toward your temples — try CORALista by Benefit Cosmetics. Begin by swiping a deep chocolate liner across your lash line. Next, dust your entire lid with the Ivory base, and then swipe the medium-brown matte shadow (third square in from the left) from the inner corner of your lid upward and outward towards your brow bone, creating a muted cat-eye effect. Next dip your brush into the deepest, shimmery chocolate brown shade (second in from the right) and press the shadow between your lash line and your crease. Re-swipe the inner third of your lid with the medium-brown shadow and blend it toward the darker color. Re-line your eyes for added definition, adding some of the deep chocolate liner to the outer corner of your bottom lid and along the inside in your waterline. Swipe a q-tip along your bottom lash line to get a more smudgey feel. Finish the look by dusting the shimmery rose-gold shadow (third in from the right) along your tear duct in a slight “V” shape. Swipe on a few coats of brown mascara, top and bottom, and a shimmery salmon lipstick (we recommend Ulta Lip Butter in Vienna), and you’re good to go!

Camilla Belle Masters Bold Brows and a Semi-Matte Lip

February 13, 2014 at 8:00 am , by

While there are plenty of contenders, we consider Camilla Belle a best-brows-ever veteran — a title she so graciously preserved at the premiere of Cavemen in Los Angeles last week. Dewy skin and minimal eye makeup balance the ferocious vibes cast by her choppy bob hairstyle and bold, nearly-matte lip. If we had to guess, we’d say her pout was inspired by Pantone’s color of the year, Radiant Orchid (we recommend trying this matte lip gel by Marc Jacobs Beauty — you’ll get the pigment of a matte with the comfort of a gel). The entire look is strikingly sexy and fashion-forward without overdoing it.

Try Natalie Zea’s Rose Gold Smoky Eye

January 16, 2014 at 7:00 am , by

Natalie Zea was bold and beautiful last week at the 2013 TCA Winter Press Tour FOX All-Star Party. We love her entire romantic look but what stands out for us most is her rose gold smoky eye; it’s perfect for those who are interested in experimenting with a classic smokey eye but typically shy away from dark makeup.

Here’s how to get Natalie’s look: After applying your usual primer and foundation, go the extra mile and pat on an eye shadow primer from your lash line to your brow bone (try Nars Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base – it’s lightweight but powerful formula will keep your shadow in place for hours). This extra dose of primer will keep your gorgeous eye makeup in place all day. Next select your eye shadow palette – you’ll want it to range from a pale pink shimmer to a deep plum matte (we recommend Urban Decay’s new Naked 3 palette , which is rose gold specific).

Begin by using a light eyeshadow such as Urban Decay’s “Dust;” blend this shadow from your lash line all the way up to your brow bone. Next, cover your eye lid only in a medium rose shade such as Urban Decay’s “Buzz”. Use and angled brush to smudge that same color along your lower lash line. Finally,  blend a dark reddish tint such as Urban Decay’s “Darkside” into your eyelid crease and blend any lines. Finish your upper lash line with a swipe of liquid eyeliner. The, use highlighter to brighten the inner corners of your eyes. Swipe on some mascara (top and bottom lashes!) and you’re good to go!

Beauty Coach: How to apply gel eye liner

February 5, 2010 at 10:46 am , by

Step 1. Get your hands on a pot of gel liner. My go-to is Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Liner in Espresso Ink. It glides right on and won’t budge once it dries. I also like Maybelline’s new Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner, a budget-friendly option that also comes with a little brush. It’s the formula I’m wearing in the photos below.

Step 2. Pick your brush. I like to use a square tip eye liner brush like the classic Trish McEvoy Brush #11 or an angled brush like M.A.C.’s #263. Dip it into your gel and scrape it on the sides of the pot a couple times. It’s always easier to work with a small amount and then add more later.

Step 3. Close your eye and gently pull your lid taut with your finger. Place your brush right on top of the roots of your lashes. I like to start in the middle of the eye and then move the brush to the outer corner. Go back and line the inner corner of the eye last. Remember, the closer you keep your brush to the lash line, the more natural it will look.

Step 4. If you want a little more intensity, lift your lid and press your brush very gently under the roots of your lashes. This may look a little scary, but it’s really easy. I do it all the time and haven’t poked myself in the eye yet!

Repeat on your other eye and you’re done!
