Scents of Summer

Over lunch last week I was reminiscing about a fragrance that I wore into the ground back in college. Anyone remember Ralph by Ralph Lauren? I don’t know if it was my obsession with turquoise (the bottle had a cute blue cap) or the light mix for fresh fruit and flowers. Whatever the reason, I was hooked. Once I weaned myself off of that I was able to clear my senses and search for a new signature scent, but I haven’t been able to find a replacement that I’ve fallen in love with. Now seems like a great time to resume my search.

While I may be too picky about perfume, the change of seasons, or at least the change in weather, is the perfect time to try a new fragrance. Here are some of the lightest, sweetest (but not too sweet), and cleanest scents that go perfectly with warm breezes.

Clean Summer Escape, $49

Notes: Crisp Bergamot, Beach Grass, Mandarin Orange, Water Lily, Summer Peony, Beach Honeysuckle, Orange Flower, Cotton Blossom, White Sand Accord, Driftwood, Coconut Water

Philosophy Summer Grace, $40

Notes: Blooming Flowers, Sun-Ripened Fruits

Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Lavender, $39

Notes: Meyer Lemon, Sicilian Mandarin, Spearmint, Wild Chamomile, Green Tea, Oolong Tea, Organic Lavender Bulgarian Orpur, French Lavender, Absolute Orpur, Chinese Magnolia, Soft Skin Musks, Birchwood, Ambrette Seed

Ralph Lauren Romance Summer Romance, $78

Notes: Passion Fruit, Hibiscus, Tiare Flowers, Apricot Musk

Lancôme Ô de L’Orangerie, $55

Top Notes: Orange zest, Orange Blossom essential oil
Heart Notes: Orange Blossom absolute, Jasmine
Base Notes: Cedar, Benzoin

Thymes Naia Cologne, $32

Notes: Yuzu, Lychee, Lemon Pulp, Water Lily, Cyclamen, Bamboo Leaves, Hinoki Wood, Musk

If you enjoy fragrance, but not particularly wearing one, this room spray may be a good alternative. I was surprised at how crisp and fresh it smelled for a Disney fragrance.

Imagination Room Spray by Disney Store, $16.50

Notes: Sequoia trees, cool moss and green leaves

Three Ways To Wear Fragrance This Holiday Season

The cooler months of the year are a good time to switch perfumes. You probably wouldn’t feel right wearing your summer slip dress around town after October, doesn’t it make sense to update your fragrance, too? Here are the perfect scents for any wintertime occasion.

Left to right: Femme, Bombshell and Daisy

At a dinner party with in-laws or colleagues, try something softer so you don’t overwhelm anyone you want to stay in good standing with. Your fragrance shouldn’t resemble any smells wafting from the table, so we recommend cool floral tones instead. Our favorites include Femme by Herve Leger from Avon($34) and Hanae Mori’s No. 2 ($95), which is nice and crisp.

On a date night, let your hair down and indulge in something a little more heady and sensual. Two new scents do that surprisingly well – one from Christina Aguilera, Christina Aguilera By Night ($39), isn’t at all overpowering. The other, Bombshell by Victoria’s Secret ($45-65), is as evocatively feminine as their other collections, but not as sticky sweet.

Lastly, for the day after a big event, keep migraines at bay with a light, clean scent. Beauty by Calvin Klein ($65-85), fits the bill. Or if you’re looking for an even more subtle aroma, consider solid perfume. We like Daisy by Marc Jacobs ($40) – and the ring it comes in is cute, too.

A Supermodel-Approved Five-Minute Beauty Routine

It’s easy to look good when you have a team of hair stylists and makeup artists planning for any weather catastrophe and lighting situation, but how do supermodels get ready when left to their own devices? I recently met Victoria’s Secret Angels Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr at the launch of the new Heavenly Flowers fragrance. The trio gave me their day-off tips for looking good with minimal effort.

Alessandra said she can get out the door in five minutes with a little concealer, blush and mascara. Her favorite trick, though, doesn’t involve makeup at all, but an eyelash curler for a wide-awake look.

Candice pulls her hair back into a cute pony tail or bun because she doesn’t like to mess with her hair when she’s not working. She laments the abuse her hair receives while she’s on-duty and prefers to go au naturel on her free time.

Miranda’s favorite out-the-door-in-seconds trick is using a scented body lotion to make her skin glowy and leave a faint trail of fragrance. Her new springtime favorite? Victoria’s Secret Heavenly Flowers Softening Body Lotion, $20, of course.
