How To Wear It: Hot Holiday Nails

December 19, 2011 at 4:14 pm , by

Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean you have to paint little candy canes—or Santas…or reindeer—on each of your fingernails (unless you’re a 10-year-old). Here are a couple of grown-up ways to show-off your season’s greetings with lacquer.

Get glitter happy

Not only is glitter polish festive, but it holds on a little longer and is forgiving with chips and smudges, says celebrity manicurist Beth Fricke.  If you can’t find a glitter polish in the color you love, try putting a coat of sparkle over your favorite hue (and don’t forget to seal the deal with a good topcoat).

Break it up

Swipe your nails in a traditional red and then top them with silver or gold shatter polish. “It will look like you have an ornament on every finger,” says Fricke.  Apply polish and let it dry completely for 10 minutes, and then apply the shatter. When it is shattered to your liking, apply a shiny topcoat.

The Dark Side of Beauty

In the spirit of Halloween we’ve dug up a few of our favorite boo-tiful finds.

Top Shop Smokey Eye Kit: Smoky Eyes Quad in Smouldering, $20
These four powders pretty much take the guess work out of creating a dark and mysterious eye.

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Black Satin, $25
How can a rich and shiny nail polish look anything but glam?

Shea Terra Organics African Black soap, $22
A spoonful of this raw soap powder added to you bath seriously does wonders for skin.

Benefit Benetint Lip & Cheek Stain, $29
Add a splash of color and tap into your vampy side with a blood red elixir that brightens cheeks and lips.

Monday Beauty Bargain!

March 14, 2011 at 9:30 am , by

Tarte 8th World TSV FINALI don’t usually get excited about Mondays, unless there’s a beauty bargain to score. Today I’m in luck because one of my favorite brands is offering a big one: Tarte’s 8th World Wonder, a seven piece beauty kit (a $175 value), is $48.36 today on QVC. The clock is ticking though; after midnight, the price goes up to $58.

I love this deal because the kit comes with everything you need to look amazing for spring, including shimmery pink blush, lipgloss, eyeliner, foundation, mascara, eyeshadow and a luxe powder brush. And you can use the chic makeup bag to hold your new goodies! I may even use it as a cute clutch for a night out with my friends.

If only everything in life could be this practical, and come in such cute packaging!

The Best Makeup Looks You Can Learn On YouTube

November 22, 2010 at 1:17 pm , by

If you were to type in “makeup tutorial” on video-sharing website YouTube, you’ll find more than two millions results. It may seem like a long, endless list, but we’ve narrowed it down to the top five looks that we know you’ll love.

YouTube superstar Michelle Phan has over a million subscribers, a contract with Lancome and has even been featured in the New York Times. Phan may be more well known for her over-the-top looks (her most viewed videos are all based on Lady Gaga), but her “Professional Day to Glamorous Nights Out” look is doable for those of us who want to be taken more seriously.

This Stuff Works: MAC Moisturecover Concealer

April 28, 2010 at 10:29 am , by

defaultThis Stuff Works: Products we love so much it can sound like we’re being paid to dish about them—but we’re totally not!

I’ve always had trouble with the black rings under my eyes. I tried to hide them by exaggerating my eyelashes or using foundation, but nothing seemed to work. Then I was introduced to MAC Select Moisturecover. Although I was skeptical at first that a tiny tube could do wonders for my always-present dark circles, I’m definitely a convert now. It’s the must-have item in my makeup bag because it really works. It conceals dark circles and also hides spots and blemishes, and the wand makes it easy to apply and blend. I love it so much I even call this concealer my “magic stick!”

Is there a beauty product you can’t live without? Tell us in the comments and you may be featured in an upcoming “This Stuff Works” column!
