We need your help! General Mills and Merck have committed to donating $900,000 (!) to Join My Village, a program that helps fight poverty in Malawi, run by our friends at CARE. The initiative helps lift whole African communities out of poverty (and hunger) by giving girls the tools they need to spark change, whether that’s fertilizer to grow corn or teachers and school supplies. On the site your clicks help unlock tokens—and $1 donations—to the cause.
So what can you do? If you go to JoinMyVillage.com right now and sign up with the code “JMV4LH,” it will release $5 (for the first 2,000 LHJ readers) to help these women and girls in need, and then of course you can stick around and keep learning and unlocking dollars. These girls’ stories are so powerful that I’d watch and read even if there wasn’t a donation attached—but how awesome is it that there is?
So go right now and sign up! A few minutes of your time could truly change lives.

Have you joined a village yet to help fight poverty and empower women in Malawi? If you did join, have you gone back to check on your village’s progress? When we first blogged about Join My Village, the program was brand-new. Now the effort has raised more than $94,000 (which is amazing!) but we have the potential to unlock up to $56,000 more! That means we all need to remember to log in and interact to help our village teams get the money they need. You could raise $5 per day just by answering quiz questions and sending the link to friends. It’s such an easy way to do a lot of good with a little effort—and that money will go a long way in Malawi! Check it out now and join (or participate) to truly make a difference.

Yes, I’m going to keep blogging about this amazing program until you join. Seriously, though, Join My Village is a fast and easy way to have a big impact on the lives of women and girls in Mawlai (one of the world’s poorest countries) without having to leave your house or spend a dime. Sign up, join a virtual village team, and take a few quiz questions each day or share the site with your friends to unlock dollars that go directly to your real Malawi community. We hope to see you there!

1. 15 Strangest Breast Cancer Awareness Products
Breast cancer is no laughing matter, and of course we want you to be as educated as possible when it comes to preventing the disease, but some of the products out there promoting awareness are a little, well, weird. They’re not going to save your life, or remind you to do a breast self-exam, but they might come in handy if you need to shoot someone or want your floors cleaned. Read the full list.

Herb Brooks’ pre-game pep talk before the famous 1980 “Miracle” hockey game against the Soviet Union, as performed by “Rizzo,” a 4-year-old.
3. Say It with Bacon
Grateful Palate has a Bacon of the Month Club which delivers a package of artisan bacon to your home every month. The membership also gets you a t-shirt, a membership card and a pig nose! Personally, I always thought there was only one kind of bacon – delicious – but the membership could prove me wrong.
3. Building Windmills in Malawi
Inspiring story of the week: a boy in Malawi who couldn’t afford to go to school checked some books out of the library and built a windmill to provide electricity for his village.

Update: My apologies if you’ve already read and joined, but this is so exciting and important that I’m bumping this post back up to the top!
We’re so excited to spread the word about Join My Village! It’s an awesome new initiative to help fight poverty in Malawi by giving women and girls the tools they need to make a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities. Malawi is a very poor country with high infant mortality and low life expectancy—especially for women. But the way to change can be surprisingly simple (at least to us Westerners). Whole villages are uplifted when women and girls can improve their schools and access to education, farm their land, and start their own businesses.
Of course we can’t all travel to Africa to help directly, so Join My Village sponsors CARE and General Mills came up with a great way to help us all have an impact from home: All you have to do is visit JoinMyVillage.com and join a virtual village. General Mills will donate up to $500,000 to nearly 75 villages in Malawi through the program, so when you join a team, take quiz questions, and share the site with friends, you’ll raise $1 each time. (Up to $3 per day, per person.) Plus you’ll get to learn about the real live village you join, and the real women you’re helping to support. You can also donate money and General Mills will match your donation.
Pretty cool, right? I just signed up today (Go Kalimira village!) and I’m asking everyone who reads this to join a village too—and tell your friends and family. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it can make a big difference.
