Day to Night: Short Pixie Hair

July 25, 2013 at 7:00 am , by

The pixie cut is great for hot summer days and lately, Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, and Ginnifer Goodwin have been tempting us to try this short, flirty style. In the new ad campaign for Louis Vuitton 2013, Michelle Williams shows off  the perfect way to transform breezy daytime hair into sultry date-night-out hair.

Paired with a deep berry lip and perfectly penciled eyebrows, Williams looks effortlessly chic with her short hairstyle. Not only is this edgy pixie easy to pull off, it’s perfect for the in-between-haircut weeks or for those of us trying to grow out short ‘dos.

Here’s how to steal this style: Start by washing hair with thickening shampoo and conditioner. Spritz damp hair with a texturizing beach spray, and blow dry straight with a flat brush. Use fingers to gently tousle hair and a flatiron to smooth away any frizz or flyaways. When finished, simply mist with light-hold hairspray to set. Looking for more inspiration? Hair Drama without the Trauma

We can't get enough of Michelle Williams' timeless blonde pixie cut and Rihanna's red curls.

HAIR LUSTS: Michelle Williams' classic pixie and Rihanna's curly, red locks.

Are you ready to make a dramatic hairstyle change like Kate Winslet’s bleach blonde pixie haircut? Deciding to cut and/or dye your locks is often scary— especially when you don’t have a personal glam squad to re-create your old style— but sometimes a short pixie cut or ruby-hued hair is exactly the beauty pick-me-up you need. Before you take the plunge, here are some tips to help you make the right decision:

Consult with your hairstylist. A hair consultation isn’t simply showing your stylist a photo of the hairstyle or color you want. You should ask the tough questions:

  • What is the best look for my face shape?
  • How will my hair care routine change with this cut or color change?
  • Will you have to frequent the salon more often?
  • Will this hairstyle fit with my busy schedule?

Get makeup tips. “A drastic hair color change will often necessitate some makeup tweaks,” says New York City stylist and salon owner Sam Brocato. Before you commit, schedule an appointment with a makeup artist to find out how the rest of your beauty routine will change.

Go with your gut. If one person says the daring new haircut or color change, which you love, won’t work with your eye color, skin tone, face shape, etc, then get a second opinion. When you truly love your hairstyle, you’ll look beautiful no matter what.

Wear a wig. If you’re really unsure of your decision, why not give it a test drive? “Find a […] wig that will give you a sense of how you will look… This is as close to a crystal ball as you can get!” says Brocato. We love the Raquel Welch wig line.

If you’ve followed all these steps and you’re still unsure if you want to do a complete hairstyle overhaul, then wait awhile to decide. In a month, if you still want to make the change, then go for it!
