boxer_pup2Let the celebration begin! Today is the 6th anniversary of National Puppy Day. Created as an extension to National Dog Day, National Puppy Day has helped get over 10,000 puppies adopted each year since it first began in 2005, says founder and pet expert, Colleen Paige.

Adopting a puppy comes with lots of responsibilities, but whether you’re playing fetch or going on walks, life with a dog is just better, isn’t it? They love unconditionally, are always there when you need a laugh and they keep you active.

If you’re thinking of welcoming a cuddly canine into your home, don’t forget to do your homework first.

“Research the best breed for your lifestyle and your family. If you have hyper kids get a calmer dog. Be very thorough, a lot of animals are returned because they don’t match the owner’s personality,” Colleen says.

And always consider adopting from a shelter before you head to the pet store because the shelters are overcrowded with unwanted puppies, she adds.

This year’s National Puppy Day comes in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that has left thousands of animals without homes. If you are looking for a way to help, the Animal Miracle Network started the Japan Animal Disaster Relief where you can donate to help ship kennels and supplies to organizations caring for rescued animals.
