Merle Norman Cosmetics Celebrates Independence

July 4, 2011 at 9:00 am , by

Today, we’ll be handing over all BBQ duties so we don’t chip our new mani: A few weeks ago we learned about this super-cute mini nail polish set that OPI created exclusively for Merle Norman Cosmetics. The Americana collection, $12.50,  is perfect not only for Independence Day, but for Merle Norman—an 80-year-old, all-American company that manufactures everything stateside.

The star of the set is the newest shade, a red named Hussy that was inspired by the classic car. The set also includes Alpine Snow, a bright white, and Yoga-ta Get this Blue! and a RapiDry Top Coat.

Wear it proud.

Three Ways To Get Festive With Nail Color This Holiday

If you’re looking for a way to add some holiday spirit into your wardrobe this winter without breaking the bank, look into investing in holiday nail colors instead. This seemingly small touch can add a lot of class to your look, and winter polishes have never been more exciting. Here are some ways we’ll be wearing it under the mistletoe:

Stand out in brilliant metallics. Metallic polishes aren’t new discoveries but have never looked better or more appropriate during the yuletide season. Our pick is YSL’s La Laque Nail Lacquer from their Holiday 2010 collection. It has the softest, most luxurious glimmer.

Wear contemporary holiday colors. There’s nothing wrong with a set of red tips, but if you’re running low on your safe color choice, plums and clarets are a great option too. We love Essie‘s Luxedo shade and Silken Cord from their winter collection.

Layer up! And we’re not talking about clothes. Mix and match a layer of an opaque hue with a layer of shimmer and you’ll come up with something uniquely yours. Enhance the color of a polish you might already own with a new sparkly tone, or vice versa. We like OPI‘s Bring On The Bling or Extra-Va-Ganza on top for a fresh sheen.

Steal Alice In Wonderland’s Look

February 26, 2010 at 11:55 am , by

I’m really excited about the new Alice In Wonderland movie coming out next weekend. For one thing, Tim Burton is a visual effects master and I’m wild about the over-the-top surrealist look.

I can only imagine the talent of the hair and makeup team for the movie. Which got me thinking…how would Alice get ready to start her day? Her look is pretty natural—she’s young—but she’s traveling through a topsy-turvy world, so I can imagine that she’d be open to a little experimentation after awhile.

First, Alice would start with a sweet, girly shampoo, like this Cherry Blossom Ginseng, $7, from Organix. (Good to know: The brand has a sweepstakes starting March 10th for a vacation to London. Click here or find more info on their Alice-themed bottles.)

Urban Decay’s Alice In Wonderland Book of Shadows, $52 is packed with 16 eyeshadows that range from easy-to-wear nudes to bolder, vibrant colors. My favorite is the earthy, not-quite-brown, not-quite-gray, Mushroom shade. I think Alice would love the warm purple Queen.

And because a look is never complete without a great manicure, Alice has a fabulous polish job with OPI’s Off With Her Red, $8.50. Although I’m pretty sure by the end of her adventure, she’d be sporting her signature, Absolutely Alice, a sparkly blue.

Nail Art: Let Your Manicure Do The Talking

The latest craze in nails isn’t a fiery red polish or even slick jet black. Lately, celebrities have been sporting Minx nail decals, often in metallic colors or wild designs.

Check out Beyonce’s Minx manicure from the Grammy awards.

And a close-up of Rihanna’s Grammy nails. She has a custom Minx manicure with crystals.

Or, show your support a la Kim Kardashian who spelled out her boyfriend’s name and jersey number (#25 B U S H) on her fingers for the Super Bowl.

Want to do something special for yourself, but can’t splurge on a full set of Minx? Take inspiration from these cool ladies above and add a little dazzle to your nails. Here’s my interpretation, in time for Valentine’s Day.

First, coat your nails with fun red or magenta color. (I’m really into OPI‘s Red My Fortune Cookie.) Then to keep the look from being overly saccharine, paint a heart on one finger only. Make a “v” shape—the polish bleeds a little and will turn into a heart—and four dots. The trick is to use a contrasting polish shade (white works best) and the thinnest brush you can find. Milani has introduced their Nail Art Nail Lacquers, $4, available in 10 shades, which lets you do a little Van Gogh on your digits. Have fun!

Nail Polish For Your Computer

October 8, 2009 at 3:00 pm , by

Im-Not-Really-A-Waitress2There are plenty of surfaces I’ve spilled nail polish on over the many years I’ve been painting my nails: the kitchen countertop, my cell phone, and even in the backseat of the car on a family road trip. (Sorry, dad!) Most of the time, the polish drops were a major catastrophe as they fell on treasured items. I’ve since become much better at painting my nails–patience and a desk help– but sometimes those spills produce happy accidents. Just in time for your holiday wish list, OPI and Dell have teamed up to offer three laptops that look like they’ve been dipped, dripped and swirled in OPI‘s most famous nail colors. So no more worrying about spilling polish on your much-loved computer.
