Sometimes we just can’t be bothered to wear black. Yea, we said it. Fall may be all about moody, sultry shades but a girl’s got to have some whimsy in her life (and also pattern and sparkle and even the color pink). Save those fab powder blue shoes for spring? We refuse! Store away our favorite bright frock and super sparkly baubles? We would never! We mustn’t be afraid to be a little daring, darlings. And with that, we give you this little dose of happy dressing.

It’s an age old question–once the temperatures get truly chilly, how do you stay chic and warm at the same time? The key is layers, my friends! While your bulkiest pieces can leave you looking like a marshmallow if you layer up, strategic piling on of thinner pieces can look super stylish. Take the above, a loose turtleneck is decidedly unstuffy with a cozy flannel layered underneath. Add some gray denim and chic, textured flats and you’ve got a go-to look for any cold-weather wanderings. If the temps get really low, add a cocoon coat in a complimentary color and a red beanie to finish the look.

Around the LHJ offices we’ve seen a trend developing. Staffers have been pairing flippy skirts of all colors, textures, and lengths with chunky, cozy sweaters. It’s a look that creates interest through contrast. After all, wearing your girliest skirt with a heavy, loose knit is the best of both worlds — sexy and alluringly tomboyish all at once. Whether you prefer a mini or longer length, this combo will become your new go-to fall outfit.

Apple picking, visits to the pumpkin patch, leaf gazing, and chilly nights by a campfire — these are a few of our favorite fall things — along with boyfriend jeans, beanies, and booties. Dressing for fall is all about being cozy-yet-chic and this outfit is our idea of a perfect fall ensemble. A jacket cardigan is a softer, more casual choice than a standard boyfriend blazer and distressed jeans with a rolled cuff will give the look a little something special. Don’t even get us started on that leather tote! Buttery perfection!

We love a good moto jacket around here and luck for us, they’re a hit for fall/winter this year. Our favorite styles are tailored and a little tough with eye-catching details. Whether you prefer vegan leather (like the one above) or the real deal, there are infinite ways to style your new topper. We love the contrast in this look. The ladylike accessories and full skirt keep things feminine and allow the edgy jacket to shine.

Hey, rule breakers, what if we told you you can make your favorite white (or any light color!) pants fall and winter appropriate? Happy? We thought so! The key is to go cozy and seasonal with your other items–think chunky sweaters, jewel tones, and scarves. The contrast of the light pant with darker extras makes a big impact even though you’re really working with basic pieces. Plus, wearing your white or light bottoms into the chillier months means giving your wardrobe a major extension.
