Shopping with Sue… at Lemlem

With less than 48 hours until I leave for vacation, I’ve got beach on the brain. And traveling with me will be a few of my favorite items — my scarves from Lemlem.

For the uninitiated, I’ll give you the brief story. Lemlem was created by the gorgeous supermodel Liya Kebede in 2007. The line consists of handwoven dresses, tops, skirts, scarves and shoes for women and girls. I’m not gonna lie, it ain’t cheap. But when something is special and you can wear it over and over, then maybe $150 for a scarf isn’t so bad.

Her scarves are my favorite because they always have this beautiful color mix — some amazing pop of super bright against pure white — and they are so easy to wear. I love them around my neck on a plane to keep the chill away and then as a sarong on the beach. I even wrap them around my kids as little beach dresses.

The dresses and tunics are adorable too – and even come in kids sizes – though they do run upwards of $200+. They’re carried at one of my favorite place to shop – — so I’m always on the lookout to see some pop up on sale. Oh look: there are a couple right now!

Another reason to love Lemlem is that by purchasing the product, not only are you keeping alive the ancient art of hand weaving but you are giving a job to someone who may not have had one before. Check out these pictures of the weaving process. It makes it look totally worth $150 to me.

Shopping With Sue…At Piperlime

Yes, I know we’re supposed to be doing holiday gift shopping at this time of year but you need something too, right?

For the uninitiated, Piperlime is an online retailer owned by Gap, Inc. that started out by selling shoes just a few years back. Little by little, they’ve added more accessory categories — like bags and jewelry — and several apparel brands too. It seems as though suddenly they have this amazingly curated group of super cool fashion brands — all under one convenient e-commerce roof. (And with free shipping and returns, it’s cheaper than driving to the mall.) Of course, there are the brands you know like Marc by Marc Jacobs and Rag & Bone but there are lots of other cool lines that are probably new to you. (They are to me!) Ever heard of Zoa? Siwy jeans? Lush? I didn’t think so. And it’s really no surprise. With guest editors like Rachel Zoe and Olivia Palermo, would you expect anything less?

Personally, I’m dying over this Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent dress that’s from an exclusive line designed especially for Piperlime. (Did I mention it’s on sale for $49.97?)

And don’t forget to check out their kid’s and men’s gift sections for some adorable under-$50 bargains — and then maybe pick up something for yourself too! Happy shopping!

Shopping With Sue…at Gap

I need new jeans. Does that ever happen to you? All of a sudden none of your jeans are working for you anymore? Perhaps it has something to do with all the winter/stress weight I’ve gained, but we’ll just ignore that fact for now, ok? OK?!? Moving on…

I’ve decided to check out what the masters of denim have at the Gap. And sure enough, they have just what I’m looking for: a slightly-faded but not-too-distressed, kinda-baggy but not-too-boyfriendy, ready-to-roll-up pair of jeans.  Love it. Granted — I should get my bum down to the store to try them on — and I will, but for now let’s just look at the website and dream that they’ll actually look like that on me. I should mention that like all denim brands, Gap is making a big push for the flare. You can find lots of them here. I think they’re adorable but not for someone who is 5’1″ like me.

While I’m shopping, I think I’ll snag this cute stripey top — one can never have too many stripes. And I’ll also be picking up this navy cardigan (not pictured) because if you know me, you know a navy cardigan is my best friend. Navy with all those browns and camels, you ask? Why yes, I think I will.

A little place I always visit on is the shoe section where sometimes you can pick up some web exclusive designer shoes like these killer wedges (Bonus: They’re on SALE!). And my new favorite place on the site is the GapMag, a brand-spankin’ new blog that features all kinds of cool insidery stuff. My favorite: the outfits spotted on fashionable Gap staffers at the Gapeteria.

And since the sun rises and sets with sale prices (at least in my opinion!), you can get 25 percent off your online purchase through Feb 26! Use code GAPSAVE25. Details here.

So, tell me…how do you like my spring-ready look? Have you picked up any new jeans lately?

Shopping With Sue…at Calvin Klein

calvin-klein-spr11-nyc-press-presentation-swimwear-111610-ph_kessler,greg _0407I know I’ve mentioned this before but…I’m really lucky. I have the best job in the world. Today’s high point was the Calvin Klein spring preview which is always a visual treat complete with pretty boys (and girls too) lounging around in various states of undress. I know, I’m supposed to be looking at the clothes — and yes, they are to-die-for — but it sure doesn’t hurt to start your day with this kind of eye candy.

So, I got inspired to hit the Calvin Klein website and see what they have available right now.

calvin collage 21. First, let’s pick up a coat. Why not? They’re all 40 percent off right now! I ‘m loving this purple funnel neck. It’s very Calvin-y and I think the purple would look great with all the black, gray, and navy I wear this time of year.

2. Now, for a dress. You know I can’t resist a sale and the opportunity of getting an adorable classic like this is so too sweet to pass up.

3. Shoes? Yes, please! I think these cutout booties will add just the edge I need.

4. A bag comes next. I think this chain detail is totally unique and a price like this for a real leather bag is ridiculous.

Ok, I think that does it. Wait – Calvin makes kids clothes too?! Oh my! I think Lily needs this faux leather jacket, no? And maybe a little something for the hubby while I’m here. At these prices, I can’t stop!

So, tell me…have you ever shopped at And goodies you want to tell me about?

Shopping With Sue… At LOFT

September 21, 2010 at 4:28 pm , by

As I’ve mentioned in the past, the ladies of LHJ are lucky enough to have a LOFT store right downstairs in our office building. And believe me, we use it! Each day, my keen fashion eye picks up on several LOFT pieces worn by my co-workers. Even the woman at the top of the masthead was rocking her LOFT boyfriend chinos this past summer. Let’s just say the obsession has reached fever pitch.

So, I decided to share with you some of my latest LOFT obsessions:

Painted stripe boatneck tee: I know, I know. I probably have too many sailor stripe tees already but when I tried this super soft one with a perfect rounded boatneck, I just had to have it. Good luck finding the blue version (its sold out just about everywhere) but the plum and gray versions are also super pretty. (Wait–should I go back and get those colors, too?)

Scuba motorcycle jacket: I’m totally obsessed with this–motorcycle zipper details but in a soft knit fabric. LOVE! But I will certainly be waiting for the sale price. And with the way LOFT throws sales around, I probably won’t have to wait long. It’d be cute over a little dress or just with cargos or jeans.

Petite Marisa Slim Cargo Pants: Yay for LOFT petites! As someone who is only 5’1″, most pants I buy are too long on me. And though many brands offer petites only on their websites, LOFT carries petites in 503 stores.  I’ve barely taken these off since I bought them a few weeks ago. And lucky you: They’re so marked down right now, you can get them for $15! If you don’t need the petite version, click here, and know that I’m totally jealous of you and your long foxy legs.

Chunky twist gem necklace: The creamy rope will add a nice lightness to heavier fall clothes but I can certainly see myself wearing it all year round.

Shilla Tie Suede Bootie: I love the way the LOFT stylist put these boots with the cropped pants, so I guess I’ll take those, too!

I asked our own oft LOFT-clad Senior Designer, Cathie Yun why she likes the store and she said “Their designs are chic and pretty. They also have my size, petite, which is so hard to find. It’s a perfect fit! Also, love the accessory collection. What’s not to love?”

Cathie, I couldn’t have said it better myself. So, tell me, what have you picked up at LOFT lately?
