If you were to type in “makeup tutorial” on video-sharing website YouTube, you’ll find more than two millions results. It may seem like a long, endless list, but we’ve narrowed it down to the top five looks that we know you’ll love.
YouTube superstar Michelle Phan has over a million subscribers, a contract with Lancome and has even been featured in the New York Times. Phan may be more well known for her over-the-top looks (her most viewed videos are all based on Lady Gaga), but her “Professional Day to Glamorous Nights Out” look is doable for those of us who want to be taken more seriously.

Talk about a striking a chord. One of the hottest videos on the web this week is “We Are the World 25 for Haiti (YouTube Edition).” But there’s no Barbra Streisand. No Celine Dion or Pink. Instead, Canadian-born singer-songwriter Lisa Lavie recruited 57 unknown YouTube musicians from around the globe to collaborate on their very own rendition of the charity single, to raise awareness for Haiti earthquake victims. “The singers recorded in their bathrooms, their closets, their bedrooms,” says Lavie. “They’re college students, receptionists—they don’t have access to real recording studios.” After “three days and one sleepless night” of editing, Lavie posted her heartfelt rendition on YouTube. To date, it has attracted an impressive 1.8 million views and counting. “I’m really proud of how everybody came together for this video,” says Lavie. “I don’t want people to think we did it for money—no one has made a penny off of it. This was about Haiti relief, and bringing as much awareness to the cause as we could.”

Life gets hectic. It’s easy to get so swept up in soccer practices, lunch appointments and the never-ending laundry pile that you don’t even have time to check in on headlines, let alone all the fun videos and news stories that everyone’s talking about.
That’s where I come in. I’m Catherine, senior web editor for LHJ. That’s right, it’s my job to play on the Internet all day. So every Friday, I (or Arpita, our associate web editor — you’ll meet her soon) will post the Cheat Sheet. It’s a roundup of things people are talking about, clicking on, and in general paying attention to instead of that pesky laundry pile. Here’s what was hot this week:
- Japan’s First Lady: “I Rode a UFO to Venus”
Japan elected a new Prime Minister last weekend, Yukio Hatoyama. He’s known for promises to reverse a generation-long economic decline and to redefine Tokyo’s relationship with Washington. His wife Miyuki Hatoyama, however, has less terrestrial concerns. In her book “Very Strange Things I’ve Encountered,” she talks about the night her soul rode a UFO to Venus. According to Miyuki, the planet is very beautiful, and very green.
