Why LHJ loves her: She knows the science behind alternative remedies, what's been proven to work and what hasn't -- and how to talk about them without sounding the least bit wacky. She was a big help on our "Good Alternatives" feature in the December 2010/January 2011 issue.

Medical degree: Georgetown University School of Medicine, 1988.

Postdoctoral training: Family practice Internship, residency program in social medicine, Montefiore Medical Center; courses in biostatistics, epidemiology and clinical trials, Johns Hopkins University.

Bio: Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, is an associate professor in the department of physiology and biophysics and in the department of family medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. She primarily teaches within the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) master's program, the first basic sciences CAM master's program in the United States. Dr. Fugh-Berman consults on herbs and dietary supplements for the Federal Trade Commission and other federal and state agencies. Her primary areas of research are pharmaceutical marketing practices and the culture of medicine. She directs PharmedOut, a Georgetown-based project, founded with public money, which educates physicians about inappropriate pharmaceutical marketing practices.

Previously, Dr. Fugh-Berman was a medical officer at the contraception and reproductive health branch of the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development. Before that she worked at the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine (now the National Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Dr. Fugh-Berman was the medical director of two CAM clinics in Washington, D.C. She's the author of The 5-Minute Herb and Dietary Supplement Consult (Lippincott, Williams and Williams, 2003) and Alternative Medicine: What Works (Williams and Wilkins, 1997). She has also coauthored The Truth About Hormone Therapy (Prima, 2002) and co-edited The Teratology Primer (Teratology Society, 2005). Dr. Fugh-Berman's articles have appeared in many academic journals, including The Lancet, BMJ, and Annals of Internal Medicine, as well as many consumer publications. An internationally known speaker, Dr. Fugh-Berman has appeared on 20/20, the Today Show, and Nightline.
