A Frightening Prognosis

In 1994, Janice Fine faced the news: possibly incurable breast tumor. Today, she's the mother of two and a recent PhD graduate. Here, we present her story in photos from the new 2004 documentary: One in Eight: Janice's Journey, a film by Cynthia A. McKeown.

Janice was just 33 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. "I had good doctors, good friends, an amazing community. I was in a very good position to make this fight," she says. "But I was terrified. People would ask, 'How do you feel?' and they wanted me to say back, 'I feel great.' But I didn't feel great. I thought, 'Hell, I have cancer. I might die.' I felt I could, on the one hand, be cradled in the bosom of a community of friends and family who loved me. But on the other hand, I was staring into a void, staring right at it, all alone."
