How Kathy Helped

Kathy: Terry and I met 25 years ago, when we both first moved to San Antonio. We started spending a lot of time together when Terry joined the women's soccer team I played on. That led to yearly ski trips and many holidays with our families together. She didn't tell me about her breast cancer right away, but I felt like something was off. When she finally told me a month later, my reaction was, "All right, let's go deal with this." She was alone, trying to hold down her teaching job, going to chemo, and moving out of her home while looking for a new one. I was afraid she wasn't able to manage it all, and I knew she needed to eat. It was never a big deal for her to come over for dinner; she's just part of my family. Our regular dinners never stopped even after Terry finished her treatments. Instead, they morphed into monthly casserole parties at my house. Terry and I also took some cooking classes at our local supermarket. Now, whenever a friend of ours is in trouble or needs something, Terry will cook for that friend for a month as a gift. -- Mego Lien
