Warning Signs Parents Need to Know

Although lethargy and loss of interest in once-loved activities are common in both adult and adolescent depression, the similarities largely end there. Here are a few of the ways teens' symptoms differ from those of adults.

Adult Symptoms:

  • Depressed mood
  • Consistent loss of pleasure in nearly all activities
  • Decrease in appetite or weight
  • Decrease in sleep
  • Decrease in libido
  • Mood may be unaffected by social situations

Adolescent Symptoms:

  • Irritability
  • Loss of pleasure in some activities
  • Increase or decrease in appetite or weight
  • Increase or decrease in sleep
  • Little change in libido
  • Mood can improve in social situations
