"I've lost and regained the same 100 pounds many times," says Gilley-Gates, who's tried countless diets, herbal supplements, and prescription drugs over the years in an attempt to control her weight. Too often she has allowed the number on the scale to control her life; once she even passed up a vacation because it involved too much walking. But after a recent visit to her doctor, who took Gilley-Gates's hand and told her she absolutely had to lose weight, she found the determination she'd been lacking. "I feel like I'm finally ready to get serious about slimming down, and I'm going to do it right this time," she says.
Gilley-Gates knows it won't be easy. She says she has to eat a lot to feel satisfied and admits overindulging on the weekends is her downfall. Fortunately, she has two major motivators: her desire to control her blood pressure without medication and to be around for her two grandchildren.
