Barbara A. Goff, M.D., Gynecologic Oncology

Dr. Goff is a professor and the director of the gynecologic oncology division, and an adjunct professor in the surgery division at the University of Washington in Seattle.


Why LHJ loves her: Because she's passionate about her research on finding ways to detect ovarian and other gynecological cancers early, when treatment can help -- and in making sure journalists understand the issues and get things right. She was a great help in LHJ's November 2010 story on ovarian cancer.

Medical degree: University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, 1986.

Postdoctoral training: Internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital; fellowship in gynecologic oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital; certificate in medical management, University of Washington.

Bio: Dr. Goff joined the University of Washington faculty in 1993 and became director of the division of gynecologic oncology in 2004. She has participated extensively in clinical research for gynecologic malignancies, serving as the PI for many clinical trials. She is actively involved in early detection research for ovarian and other gynecologic cancers. Dr. Goff has authored more than 90 articles and textbook chapters. She and her colleagues work closely with investigators doing HPV vaccine research at the University of Washington. She's been named one of the best doctors in Seattle by Seattle magazine, one of America's top doctors for cancer, the Gynecological Cancer Foundation Public Service Award, the Ladies' Home Journal Medical Breakthrough Award, and many other honors. She serves on the board of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and on the editorial boards of Gynecologic Oncology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
