INTERNAL MEDICINE

Why LHJ loves her: We've long been fans of her writing, especially her diagnostic sleuthing column for the New York Times and her recent book on medical mysteries. We're thrilled to be able to work with her on our own stories.

Medical degree: Yale University School of Medicine, 1997.

Postdoctoral training: Internship, residency, and chief resident, Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Bio: Dr. Sanders is the author of the popular New York Times Magazine "Diagnosis" column, and the inspiration for the hit TV series, House M.D. Her bestselling book, Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis, came out in paperback in 2010. A board-certified internist, she was educated and trained at Yale School of Medicine and remains on the faculty there teaching medical students and residents.

Her monthly New York Times Magazine column, "Diagnosis," explores how a doctor is able to make a diagnosis in patients whose baffling symptoms have brought them back to the office or emergency room time after time. These stories unfold like a classic detective novel, following the doctor-sleuth as she sifts through clues and interrogates witnesses in pursuit of the true culprit and the final diagnosis.

In her book Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis, Dr. Sanders takes the reader into the trenches of medical diagnosis. It can be a messy process, filled with red herrings, false leads, and dead ends. Yet, despite the difficulties, the answer is often reached, and lives are saved. Dr. Sanders is able to translate the intricacies of medical science and technology into stories that the reader can understand and enjoy.

Before going to medical school, Dr. Sanders was an Emmy award-winning producer at CBS News. She lives in New Haven with her husband and two daughters.
