Prom Night, 1989

Our dresses were poufy, our wrist corsages were huge -- and the hair? There are almost no words.

That's me on the far right with my friends Angela and Marcie on prom night, 1989. In our New York high school, huge hair was in and our biggest worry was running out of hair spray. But we didn't just rock this look on prom night. Nope, we permed and sprayed and teased our hair into towering 'dos regularly. One time Angela actually removed the T-top of her yellow Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (another totally '80s icon) just to allow room for our hair in her car.

The key element to achieving this look was Focus 21 extra-firm-hold hair spray, which we all kept in our bathrooms at home and in our lockers at school (for midday touch-ups, naturally). It came in a black bottle with a pink label. It was like hair glue. Because of our reputation, we dubbed ourselves the Spray-ettes that year. We were determined to somehow win the title of "biggest hair in the county." We did end up getting our 15 minutes of hair fame when a local paper profiled us in a story about high school graduates. The article, which featured a picture of us in graduation gowns and mortarboards with "Spray-ettes" scrawled on the top, solidified how awesome we thought we looked.

I'm still close friends with Angela and Marcie and we crack up when we talk about those days. I wear my hair long and straight now, but this picture is a constant reminder not to take myself too seriously -- with or without the aerosol-assisted hairdo.
