Little Rock, the Arkansas' state capital made famous by the Clintons, began as a settlement at a popular crossing of the Arkansas River. The city drew world attention in 1957, when federal troops were sent there to enforce an earlier U.S. Supreme Court ruling to desegregate the public schools. A landmark is the old statehouse, which served as capitol from 1836 to 1910. The present capitol building was built in 1911. The city also features several major museums. In addition, Little Rock will be the home of the Clinton Library. There are 56 parks in Little Rock, covering more than 6,000 acres, as well as several lakes, which provide excellent fishing, sailing, and other water sports.
