Daily Inspirations: Attitude

A collection of motivational and inspirational quotes and commentaries.

"People are lucky or unlucky ... according to the ratio between what they get and what they have been led to expect." -- Samuel Butler

Think about it: When someone succeeds we usually say that they were lucky. But in reality they have put in a lot of hard work. To put it another way, we each must make our own luck. How do we do this? By believing in ourselves and expecting the best possible outcome from our efforts. What do you expect out of life? Good things or only the worst? Adjust your focus so that you are consciously choosing your happiness. ------------------------------------------------------------

"All things pass... Patience attains all it strives for." -- St. Theresa of Avila

Think about it: Lasting success takes time. Like a seed that is planted in fertile ground, we must nurture our success. We must be patient as we take all the little steps that add up to our success. Don't trample your delicate dreams by giving into hopelessness (i.e. obstacles) or by neglecting your dream. Do something every day toward your goal and it will bear fruit. ------------------------------------------------------------

"The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for." -- Joseph Addison

Think about it: It doesn't really matter what it is that we do as long as we feel that it is necessary. And it doesn't matter where we happen to find love either, the important thing is that we are loved. And finally, whatever it is that we wish for in our tomorrows doesn't really matter either. As long as we nurture hope, not only do we feel more alive but we also have something to live for. So if you are feeling dissatisfied with your life, find something to do, someone to love, or something to hope for. Make your life matter. Your happiness and well-being depend on it. ------------------------------------------------------------

"Where there is no vision, the people perish." -- Proverbs

Think about it: When the hope for positive change has been extinguished, we find ourselves trapped in bitterness or regret. Without hope, without some sort of meaning in our lives, our very spirit withers. We end up living a half-life where we are afraid to dream and to reach for something better. Don't allow this to happen to you. Jump-start your life; renew your inner vigor, by designing a plan for a brighter, happier future. Create and follow your vision of how you want your life to be from now on. Let this vision nurture, motivate, and empower you to live your life more fully. ------------------------------------------------------------

"There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy. By being happy, we sow enormous benefits upon the world." -- Robert Louis Stevenson

Think about it: Mean people suck -- the life right out of you. They also don't contribute much joy to the world, if any. It is therefore up to the rest of us to rise above those who delight in making others miserable. How do we do this? First of all, no one can make you feel bad about yourself without your permission. Think about this the next time you are fuming about something someone said or did to you. Furthermore, make it your life mission to be happy and to stop wasting your time on regrets and nasty people. When you dedicate your life to your happiness you become a positive and powerful force in the Universe. Don't let negativity drag you down and extinguish your light of hope and happiness. Always fight back with a smile. ------------------------------------------------------------

"What is the hardest task in the world? To think." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Think about it: It is so easy to be less than who we are, to pass judgment, to gossip, or to be mean. Instead, take the time to think about how your words and actions will affect others. Take the time to understand and to be compassionate. Take the time to think about the kind of person you are being. In other words, what are you really saying about yourself, about your fears and insecurities, with your negative behavior? Take the time to be your best self. ------------------------------------------------------------

"O Lord! That lends me life, lend me a heart replete with thankfulness!" -- William Shakespeare

Think about it: What are you grateful for in your life? Even on the worst days, get in the habit of naming at least one thing you are grateful for, no matter how small it may seem. When you consciously practice gratitude, you find that the Universe showers you with even more abundance. --------------------------------------------------------------

"Different men seek ... happiness in different ways and by different means." -- Aristotle

Think about it: Stop comparing your life to someone else's. Would your life really be "perfect" if you were taller, thinner, smarter, wealthier, prettier, or whatever it is that you wish you had? Would you really be that much happier? Probably not -- because wherever you go, there you are. That is, being human, you will most likely still find yourself lacking something. Therefore, the secret to true happiness, to true richness, is gratitude. Embrace your life for all the abundance you already possess and embrace yourself for who you already are. Create and honor your own standards of happiness. ------------------------------------------------------------

"Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes, and seeing them gratified." -- Samuel Johnson

Think about it: Be open to new opportunities to expand your horizons and to follow your dreams. Appreciate and apply the lessons that you have learned while in the valley of fear and uncertainty. Celebrate the peaks of joy in your life, whether it is from achievement or from simply appreciating all the abundance in your life. Never lose sight of all that you are and all that you are capable of becoming. Never lose that sense of wonder and power that comes from creating your own happiness. ------------------------------------------------------------

"Do not spill thy soul in running hither and yon, grieving over the mistakes and vices of others. The one person whom it is necessary to reform is yourself." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Think about it: Even though someone has hurt you, you still have a choice. You can choose to rise above it and be true to your happiness and well-being or you can choose to dwell on it and in so doing do more damage to your self-esteem and happiness. Yes, letting go of and forgiving slights and terrible wrongs against us is one of the most difficult things that we have to learn how to do. But if you want to be happy, you will do it. If you want to move forward with your life, you will do it. If you want to take back your personal power, you will rise above and heal your own heart. ------------------------------------------------------------
