An Outer Office

Susan Giroux, a shoe designer, has always been lucky enough to work out of the comfort of the Tiverton, Rhode Island, home she shares with her husband, Paul, who runs the business side of their company. Initially, Susan used a small spare bedroom as her design command center.

"It was tight," Susan says, "and not at all inspirational." Then, about a year ago, she and Paul built a cedar potting shed in their backyard, with windows that look out over the garden and the Sakonnet River beyond.
