At Burt's Bees, maker of eco-friendly bath and beauty products, doing good is a core value. "We're committed to protecting the planet and also to improving our community," says Yola Carlough, the company's director of sustainability. In fact, employees spend up to 30 business hours a year doing just that. For example, on a 103-degree day last summer the company closed its Durham, North Carolina, headquarters so workers could join volunteers from nonprofit organizations Habitat for Humanity and KaBoom! to build an eco-friendly playground. This year Burt's Bees employees donated 400 pairs of jeans to Habitat, which repurposed them to insulate new homes.
