DIY: If you paint your nails without prepping them, your polish chips more easily, says Pattie Yankee, a manicurist in New York City. Start by soaking hands for five minutes in warm water, then use an invigorating scrub to smooth away rough, dry skin. File nails in one direction, following the shape of your nail bed. To tidy up cuticles, apply a dissolving cream, then gently push them back with an orange stick. Now you're polish-ready: Apply a base coat, two coats of color, and a clear top coat. Let dry for at least 20 minutes.
