If your kids eat a healthy dinner (with a Halloween theme, of course) before going out trick-or-treating, chances are they'll be less likely to gorge on candy later that night, says Mary Gocke, RD, a registered dietitian and nutritional counselor in New York. Such delights as chicken "fingers," monster meatballs, or vampire veggies can make the meal fun and healthful.

Another smart idea: keep tasty treats like almonds and string cheese handy on Halloween night. Encouraging your kids to snack on these low-glycemic foods throughout the night can help lower their blood sugar, Gocke says.
