Pati Going Frey, Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Traveling in Zambia, where many families live on less than a dollar a day, made a huge impact on Frey. "You think, 'How is it fair that we have so much and they have so little?' It just breaks your heart. But then you think, 'Well, what am I going to do about it?'" She met a local woman who was teaching women in Zambia how to sew handmade recycled bags but didn't know how to get them sold in the United States. Frey knew she could take on the task. Through word of mouth and sheer persistence, she has built a grassroots network of American women who sell the bags. In just one year she has raised more than $20,000.
