Amy Berman
Through her Mother Bear Project, Berman and volunteers all over the country have sent more than 60,000 handmade crocheted and knit bears to kids in 18 African countries and in Haiti. The bears provide comfort and hope for the children, many of whom have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS; some kids have the disease themselves. "With each stitch I make, I think of them," says Berman. "I've seen how they love the bears -- children of all ages hold them close. I know every bear is making a difference to the child who receives it."
