The New Crafters

Augusta Donaldson
Heavy Knitter

Who I am: Augusta Donaldson, 29, an art teacher in Richmond, Virginia.

Where you'll find me: Selling my wares online at ADKnits or looking for a special yarn at The Yarn Lounge in Richmond -- they have some beautiful ones.

Learning curve: My mom taught me to knit when I was a kid and I got back into it during college when I decided to make each person in my family a sweater for Christmas. You could see how each one got progressively better. My dad lucked out and got the last -- and best -- one I made.

The fast and the furious: To prevent boredom I decided to knit little things that I could finish quickly, like fingerless gloves, change purses, coasters and pincushions -- the types of items I now sell.

Nature's call: I often work in an earthy palette that's inspired by the outdoors and add embroidered trees, flowers and other natural motifs to my work.

Latest obsession: I started felting some of my projects, like hot pads and bowls. The technique gives knitted or crocheted wool fabric an interesting texture and it's super easy to do. You just knit more loosely and then wash the item in hot water with some mild detergent to shrink it.

Why needles = stress relief: I find the repetitive action very soothing. When I get home from work I knit for a while. I get a lot of joy out of that.
