If you crave comfort food but don't want -- or need -- the extra calories, there are some tricks you can try to reproduce low-fat versions of your favorites. Try substituting broth for oil in dishes like shrimp scampi or beef stew. Yogurt, applesauce, or a combination of the two can keep a cake moist without the fat. Even a high-calorie dish like barbecued pork can be cut down to size by substituting a leaner cut of meat. To add flavor, try caramelizing your apples before you bake them in a pie or eliminate the main calorie culprit, the crust, by using phyllo dough instead. Remember, for every teaspoon of oil you cut, you save 45 calories -- enough to shed five pounds in a year if you do it daily. Now, that's a comforting thought.
