Your garden may not grow in winter,
but this wreath can.

  • Purchased evergreen wreath
  • Raffia
  • Hot-glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • 2 small green apples
  • Old garden trowel
  • Fresh or dried artemisia
  • Chinese tallow-tree berries
  • Preserved green oak leaves
  • Fresh rosemary
  • Medium-gauge florist's wire
  • 1 leftover paperwhite narcissus bulb
  • 3 miniature flowerpots

Instructions:

1. Add artemisia to wreath. Cut the artemisia stems into pieces that are slightly shorter than the longest evergreen branches in the wreath. Apply hot glue to the bottom portion of the artemisia stems and insert them into the evergreens. The stems should point in the same direction so the artemisia leads the eye clockwise around the wreath.

2. Add berries, leaves and rosemary. Glue bunches of Chinese tallow-tree berries (also called popcorn berries) into the wreath in the same way you added the artemisia. Add preserved oak leaves and fresh rosemary for contrasting textures.

3. Attach trowel and bulb. Use florist's wire to attach the trowel to one side of the wreath. Wire the narcissus bulb at an angle above the trowel, and cover the wire with a raffia bow.

4. Add flowerpots and apples. Wire the miniature flowerpots to the opposite half of the wreath. Wedge small green apples into two of the pots.

More Ideas:

  • Florist's supply stores will carry many of the materials for this wreath.
  • Flowerpots with chipped rims are perfect for this rustic wreath. If you have a pot without a hole in the bottom, you can drill one using a masonry bit at slow speed.
