Melanie Dawn Harter and her husband, Allen Searls, planned on keeping their two chinchillas far away from their new pug, Empress Bebe, since they were told that the dog had been surrendered to a local shelter for behavioral issues. To their surprise it was love at first sight for "Beebs" and Lightning, a pink white chinchilla. "Lightning came right up to Beebs until they were nose to nose and she didn't even growl," says Harter, a photography student in Washington, D.C. Now Beebs and Lightning play every night, and the patient pug lets the chinchilla groom her face and paws and even jump up on her back.
