"Build-your-own whatever is always a hit here," says Toni Klym McLellan, a mother of three boys living in Woodstock, Illinois. "Tacos, burritos, sandwiches...the kids all have varying tastes, so having choices is a huge deal to them."
Build-your-own is also ideal if some members of the family are vegetarian or vegan, says Janet DeGras, author of Mosaic Meals: Bringing Vegans, Vegetarians, and Omnivores Together. "Meals assembled in layers at the table can make everyone a participant. Individual pizzas, vegetable-based soup with scoops of meat as a garnish, and 'bars' for making baked potatoes and pasta are great for this."
