Guided Adventure

Delaware Water Gap,
copyright Dick Lugwig
Start your visit at Delaware Water Gap, where the river makes a stunning S-curve through the mountains. All area attractions are located along Rt. 209 for 30 miles. If you're traveling with small children -- or simply want guided, outdoor instruction -- your best bet is one of the following spots:
- Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC). The largest facility of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, this nature teaching center is based in an old honeymoon resort. (Carpeting now covers the heart-shaped dance floor). Day hikers can borrow blindfolds at the main lodge and walk the short "sensory trail." It'll open everyone's ears, noses, and minds to nature in a new way. Weekenders can stay in small lodges on site, and sign up for programs about wildlife, plants, and the history of the area. There are also plenty of short and long trails for walking or cross-country skiing.
- Mohican Outdoor Center. Stop in this Appalachian Mountain Club facility for a hiking map and some nights for live jazz as well. Weekenders can hunker down in primitive cabins and take courses on winter camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more.
