Quick fix: Spend 15 minutes on a blow-dry
"Volume is all about lifting your hair at the roots," says Jessica Tingley, Aveeno hairstylist. "When it air-dries, the roots fall flat and your hair ends up looking limp." Apply a lightweight mousse like Aveeno Nourish + Style Volumizing Foam, $7.50, or a root-lifting spray, then divide into sections. As you blow-dry, use a ceramic round brush to lift the roots up and away.
Quick fix: Lose the flatiron
If you have big curls or waves, you may be tempted to straighten them into submission. "This can kill your natural volume and look overdone," says Oribe, an A-list hairstylist whose clients include Cindy Crawford and Jennifer Lopez. Hot rollers or a curling iron will help smooth and polish strands without affecting body. Or try a straightening iron with a round barrel, like the InStyler, $119.
Long term: Color your hair
"Single-process permanent formulas bulk up hair so it feels thicker," says Rick Wellman, co-owner and color director at the Patrick Melville Salon, in New York City. (We like Clairol Nice 'n Easy, $8.) Highlights can also add extra texture and depth and are a lower-maintenance option. They are trickier to do at home, though, so you may want to go to a professional.
