The skin on your lips has a lot working against it: thinness, very little protective pigment (that redness you see is actually how blood flow looks through a translucent barrier), and few oil glands. This combination, says Chicago dermatologist Amy Derick, MD, leaves lips particularly vulnerable to parching. "That skin is often wet because you lick your lips, so there's consistent evaporation and dehydration in progress."
