"The winter is the worst for my lips. I put on lip balm before bed, but the next day it's the same battle."
-Lisa DiRaimo, Warwick, Rhode Island
The Rx: "Your lips won't absorb the balm if there's a layer of dead skin on top," says Arielle Kauvar, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center. To get rid of the flakes, apply a dab of lip scrub (or mix sugar and water together to make your own). Afterward, coat your lips with balm -- the milder, the better. (We like Aquaphor Lip Repair, $4.50.) Avoid medicated formulas that contain camphor or menthol, since they can irritate already-chapped skin.
