"Why Should Mothers Die?" the magazine asked in 1936, reporting that "in the past 25 years, 375,000 of our women have died from pregnancy and childbirth." We urged readers to support a national push to lower the maternal mortality rate. From 1939 to 1948 it declined 71 percent. And by 1958 we were fighting for better treatment in maternity wards.
