Quiet Time

If, between your kids and your job and everything else, you are actually lucky enough to carve out some time to steal away with a good book, it should be to a place that's invitingly comfy and quiet. By no means must you dedicate an entire room to reading -- a seldom-used corner is all you really need. The non-negotiables? The spot must be situated away from the flow of everyday traffic and have ultra-comfortable seating and proper lighting. And so that it encourages rest rather than stress, choose calm, soothing colors for the walls and furniture fabrics, and keep the spot uncluttered. Add a small sound system to play favorite CDs for a surefire way to block out the noise from the rest of the house, and snuggly throws and pillows to encourage a lengthy stay.

Welcoming Window Seat
Some window seats are built more for the way they look than for the way they work, with too-narrow dimensions that result in careful perching rather than serious lounging. This extra-deep window seat, built in front of a bay window and piled with plush throw pillows, is an exception. And the equally inviting armchair and ottoman paired alongside it encourage family reading get-togethers.
