Measure the area you will plant and draw a rough sketch, with 1 inch of the drawing representing 5 feet of garden space. Note the type and location of trees on the map and indicate shady and sunny areas with a highlighter -- yellow for areas that get six hours of direct sunlight a day, orange for partial sun (three to six hours), blue for very shady zones. Use pencil dots to denote dappled light and allow for trees that have not yet fully leafed out.
