Create eye-catching, sunny color with these expert tips and advice.

  • This summer's sexiest blond consists of golden tones with lighter pieces around the face. Rita Hazan, Jessica Simpson's colorist and owner of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City, loves a sunny feel. "I just made Jessica baby blond, with light pieces in the front and darker color underneath for depth," she says.
  • Even women with dark hair can go lighter by adding honey or strawberry shades (think Jennifer Lopez, another Hazan client).
  • Worried that blond won't look natural if you're now a brunette? Lightening your natural brown base, then adding subtle blond highlights for contrast mimics the sun's effect.
  • Leave the drastic color changes to the pros. "Don't go more than two shades lighter than your natural color," says Mike Petrizzi, senior stylist at the Antonio Prieto Salon in New York City. "It is a recipe for disaster."
  • If you think it's impossible to get rich color outside a salon, think again. "I use at-home highlighting kits on shoots," says Giselle, a New York City colorist and spokesperson for Clairol. "They're great for quick color."
  • What to do with your eyebrows? Let them be! "Everyone's brows are naturally darker than their hair," says Giselle. "Dying them often looks artificial." Instead, try thinning them for a lighter feel, says Petrizzi.
