Create Perfect Curls

Curly hair is naturally dry and fragile and needs to be treated gently," explains Dickey, a New York City salon owner and founder of Hair Rules, a line of curly hair products. The detergents in regular shampoo may be too drying for this texture, so he recommends cleansing with a mild, sulfate-free formula and always following with a deep conditioner.

Prevent curls from separating and frizzing by applying your styling product while hair is still wet and in its natural curl pattern. Garnier Fructis celebrity stylist Marc Mena suggests working the product into your hair in small sections to avoid missing any strands.

You can air-dry -- without touching your hair -- or use a diffuser on the low heat setting. Dickey prefers a portable hood dryer. Let it preheat while you shower and then sit under it for 10 to 15 minutes," he says. Once curls are fully dry, break them up a bit with your fingers.
