Experience

Your colorist has experience.

Don't assume that every colorist is a highlighting whiz. "Most colorists only cover grays all day long, so be sure to ask if they highlight on a regular basis," cautions Gretchen Monahan, Dove Hair Care celebrity stylist. Find out if he or she is skilled in the various highlighting techniques and ask which one best suits you. Foils and hair painting deliver the most natural results and are the easiest to grow out, reports Alexandra Matiz, a Fort Lee, New Jersey-based master colorist for Wella Professionals, while chunking offers a bolder effect but requires more upkeep. Ask around or even stop a woman whose highlights you admire. "Just be sure she has the same hair color as you!" says Rita Hazan, a New York City colorist and salon owner.
